For over a decade, Lightning and USB-C coexisted as two competing standards in the mobile world. That coexistence is coming to an end: since the iPhone 15, even Apple has abandoned its own connector. Here's what truly sets these two technologies apart, and why USB-C ultimately won.
Launched by Apple in 2012 to replace the 30-pin connector, Lightning is a proprietary, reversible connector used exclusively on Apple products (iPhone, certain iPads, AirPods, accessories). Its main advantage at the time: a compact, reversible design, while competitors were still using Micro-USB, which was neither reversible nor as durable.
USB-C is an open standard, developed by the USB Implementers Forum (a consortium including Apple, Intel, Samsung, and many others), launched in 2014. Unlike Lightning, it belongs to no single brand: any manufacturer can use it without a proprietary license. This openness explains its rapid adoption across Android devices starting in 2015-2016.
Data transfer speed. USB-C supports significantly higher speeds (up to 40 Gbps with USB4/Thunderbolt), while Lightning remained limited to USB 2.0 speeds on most Apple devices (480 Mbps), with few exceptions on higher-end models.
Charging power. USB-C supports up to 240W via USB Power Delivery, allowing the same cable to charge a smartphone or a laptop. Lightning tops out around 12-20W depending on the model.
Universality. This is the most noticeable difference day to day: a single USB-C cable can charge a recent iPhone, a MacBook, an Android tablet, a camera, or a pair of earphones. With Lightning, a cable only worked with compatible Apple products.
Digital audio. Both connectors can transmit a digital audio signal, but USB-C benefits from a much larger accessory ecosystem, as most manufacturers moved away from Lightning toward USB-C as soon as they could.
The move to USB-C on iPhone wasn't a spontaneous strategic choice by Apple, but a direct consequence of European regulation requiring a universal charging connector to reduce electronic waste. Once this change was mandated for the European market, Apple extended it to its entire global lineup rather than maintaining two different versions of its products.
If you own an iPhone 15 or later, all your USB-C accessories (chargers, earphones, external drives) work directly, with no adapter needed. If you have an iPhone 14 or earlier, your USB-C accessories require a USB-C to Lightning adapter to work — a limitation that disappears entirely with a recent model.
USB-C wins on nearly every objective criterion: speed, power, universality, and ecosystem. Lightning only remains on Apple devices released before 2023 — a standard in its final stretch rather than a lasting alternative.
